Sicilian potato salad
in Sicilian:
salatedda di patati
Sicilian potato salad – a different take on a classic! Although potato salad is generally considered a typical German dish, it is definitely worth trying the Sicilian version, which is just as delicious and offers a welcome variation.
The combination of potatoes, fresh mint and chilli, along with garlic and oregano, may seem surprising at first glance. However, once you have taken the first bite, you will be convinced. It is precisely this unique combination that makes Sicilian potato salad so special. It is no less hearty than the potato salad commonly known in Germany, yet at the same time feels slightly lighter. This impression is mainly thanks to the fresh mint. Mint is one of the most typical herbs of the island of Sicily and is used in numerous recipes. Fresh mint from your own balcony or garden is of course ideal. Otherwise, simply pick up a bunch of fresh mint from your local greengrocer.
At first glance, potatoes may also seem rather unusual for Sicilian cuisine, yet there are many recipes in which they are used. They are often served as a side dish, and frequently also form an important component in vegetable dishes, such as caponata.
It is best to prepare the potato salad a few hours before serving so that it can marinate properly and the flavours have time to develop. You and your guests will hopefully be delighted with the result.
A classic accompaniment to potato salad is, of course, meat dishes in various forms, such as grilled meat. However, we are confident that Sicilian potato salad will also appeal to the vegetarians and vegans among you, and we hope that this recipe will once again inspire you to cook and enjoy.
