Description
Our Nerello Mascalese Suspiri IGP Sicilian Lands by Tenuta Papale is clear and has a brilliant ruby-red color. On the nose, the wine is complex, impressing with floral notes of rosehip and fruity hints of ripe cherries and sour cherries, as well as a grassy note on the finish.
The taste of Suspiri is warm and smooth, with balanced freshness, soft tannins, and a pronounced spiciness. The optimal serving temperature is 14–16°C. Nerello Mascalese Suspiri is an ideal companion for Parmigiana di Melanzane. It also pairs excellently with medium-aged cheeses or grilled pork. It is equally surprising when enjoyed with a porcini mushroom risotto, garnished with crispy pork belly. .
The Nerello Mascalese grape variety: also highly impressive as a single varietal wine
In the sun-drenched hills of Sicily, beneath a sky that reflects the colors of the Mediterranean, a unique grape variety thrives – Nerello Mascalese. This cultivated grape, native to the area around Mount Etna, carries in its juicy berries the heritage of centuries-old winemaking tradition.
Although this red grape variety is most often blended with Nerello Cappuccio to combine the strengths of both varieties, Nerello Mascalese also shines in its own right, without needing to hide in the shadow of a blend.
When cultivated in its purest form, this noble grape produces wines of the highest quality and remarkable balance, such as our Nerello Mascalese Suspiri IGP Sicilian Lands by Tenuta Papale. The single-varietal dedication to Nerello Mascalese results in a vinous masterpiece that enchants the senses with an impressive structure and a distinctive tannin profile.
Cultivation and characteristics
The noble Nerello Mascalese grape variety, surpassed in prominence only by the widely known Nero d’Avola, reigns as the most widely cultivated red grape on the enchanting island of Sicily. Its preferred habitat extends mainly across the volcanic soils surrounding majestic Mount Etna, as well as the fertile plain of La Piana di Catania in the sun-soaked south of the island. This is also where our Sicilian red wine Nerello Mascalese Suspiri has its origin.
Unique in its splendor, Nerello Mascalese embodies the terroir of Sicily in every juicy berry. This remarkable grape variety, naturally late-ripening, reaches its full maturity only in the magical month of October. Its berries, characterized by an impressive tannin and acidity content, possess two essential elements that pave the way for the masterful aging of wine. It is the combination of these distinctive characteristics that makes Nerello Mascalese a key component of Sicily’s winemaking landscape.
The nobility of Nerello Mascalese is further revealed in the thickness of its skin compared to the berries of Nerello Cappuccio. This seemingly subtle difference gives its wines an incomparable structure and a higher tannin content. Every drop produced from the grapes of this fascinating variety, striking the eye with its brilliant ruby-red color, is therefore a work of art, created through the careful hand of nature and the craftsmanship of the winemakers of Tenuta Papale, who capture the soul of Sicily in every bottle. In the synergy of soil, climate, and grape variety, Nerello Mascalese unfolds its unique symphony. Our Nerello Mascalese Suspiri IGP Sicilian Lands by Tenuta Papale is an impressive example of this.
