Description

The Malvasia IGP Sicilian Lands by Tenuta Papale stands out with its golden-yellow color and amber reflections, as well as its sweet, aromatic taste. The aroma of candied fruits and its intense character make it the perfect companion for all types of pastries and especially for ice cream.

The unique taste of Malvasia IGP Terre Siciliane is created through the special interplay of Sicily’s sun, soil, and mild climate. It can be enjoyed chilled (10–12°C) as an aperitif wine or slightly warmer (16–18°C) as a dessert wine.

The Wine of the Volcanoes

The “Wine of the Volcanoes” (a name given by Guy de Maupassant in his work Vita errante / The Wandering Life, who was fascinated by its incredible aromas) was described as a syrup of dense, sweetened sulfur that permeates the entire palate (“devil’s vine”). The name originates from a Christian legend dating back to the period of Muslim rule. According to this legend, a farmer carrying an amphora of Muscat wine encountered a ruler and prayed to God to be transformed into Malvasia wine. He cried out: “Malva sia.”
Viticulture reached its peak in the 19th century. At the beginning of the last century, a disease known as phylloxera destroyed most of the vineyards and caused a collapse of the local economy. After several decades of stagnation, around the 1950s, some winemakers resumed production, and in 1973 the DOC classification (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) was granted. This designation guarantees the authenticity of the wine and establishes that production may also include straw wine and liqueur wine versions, and that the wine should largely be made from Malvasia grapes of Lipari. The cultivation of Malvasia dates back to the Greeks, who introduced this eponymous grape variety in the 4th century BC.

It can be served in small wine glasses at a temperature of 16–18°C, together with blue cheese, dry biscuits, and traditional Sicilian pastries such as cassata and cannoli, or even ice cream.
